Following dosser’s advice I spent a lovely 1/2 a hour in the bath on Thursday evening. While I was in the bath Count Arthur Strong played out the final part of his 2 show run on Radio 4.
After the response I got to the last post I wrote on the Count I felt I owed it to the commenters to give him a second chance so I fired up the BBC audio player and listened again over breakfast. Well over breakfast is perhaps exaggerating – I got about 6 minutes in and couldn’t stand it any more, turned off the computer and tuned into Home Truths (which is saying something as I’m sure you’ll all agree Home Truths is a pale shadow of the John Peel era show). So back to the point – I stand by my original post – I can’t listen to Count, I really can’t, I tried but it just makes me feel really uncomfortable hearing his sneering weird comedy.
Dosser here. I really enjoyed Count Arthur Strong! I wouldn’t worry about not liking it. We’re not all supposed to laugh at the same thing are we? We’d be a right bunch of uninspired idiots if we did! I’m sorry to be the one to break it to you but according to the listings it’s on for another THREE WEEKS. And on his website it says that a new series has been commisioned to be recorded in the autumn. Which I think is very welcome news. Roll on Thursday!
Oh boy.
It’ll be ok Joe- there is always Radio 7 to fall back on.
Exactly, there’s always radio 7 to fall back on! At last the penny drops, if you don’t find something funny, twiddle the dial. You seem to think you own the 6.30 comedy slot and if you don’t like what’s on there it should be taken off. I think there’s a big audience out there for the Count but it doesn’t include you. And why should it?
You’re being a bit harsh Dosser – The problem is that on Radio 7 at 6.30 there’s not always anything worth listening to. Besides not everybody has the same opinion it’s great to see more than just the critic’s opinion and a bit of debate!
Dan
How did your blog get so contoversial Joe? I though you had peaked when you slagged off Boothby Grafoe. Fair play for creating a space to have an opinion mate.
Thanks GLR – I don’t hold that my opinion is always the right one but it’s nice to have people disagreeing – makes things a lot more interesting.
