Brain Eno on 6 Music

Thursday, May 4th, 2006

Brian Eno Last night 6 music broadcast a fantastic interview with producer legend Brian Eno.

Eno has some great stories about recording with the likes of U2 and James. He told a fantastic anecdote about Bono and his busy life style. U2 were recording their “All that you can leave behind” album and Bono was having trouble finding the time to record with the band as he was constantly on the phone to Bill Gates and the like.

Eno decided to have an afternoon where the bad were not to be interupted and told the receptionist at the studio as much. All was fine for the first hour but then the receptionist gave a sheepish knock at the door.

She mouthed to Bono across the room while making her hand into a phone – “It’s the Pope”. How could any Irishman refuse that call?

Musicubes

Sunday, March 19th, 2006

Radio One has just launched Musicubes.

The block on the left there (my musicube) is made up of my prefered music genres. Hover your mouse over each coloured block to preview.

It seems to be a pointless but pretty widget and a nice way of driving more people to the Radio One site.

I’ve removed the damn musiccube thing as it kept crashing the site.

Pandora

Pandora
There seem to be a lot of online radio stations out there as well as music recommendation sites (Last.fm, MusicStrands, etc) but until now nothing that combines the two.

Pandora is a personalised radio service that takes an artist or song you like and it generates a station of music that is related and supposedly similar. The songs it suggests can be rated – if they don’t match your selection it stop relating it to your original choice – which in theory means that the more people using it the better it’ll get.

It’s heavily American focused meaning there’s far too much crappy soft rock but the more you persevere with it the more it learns what you like. Typing the Artic Monkeys the first thing suggested was the LA Guns (a awful 80s soft rock outfit) but later on I got some good Henry Rollins and Screaming Trees.

There’s no advertising at the moment but no doubt they’ll be some very soon – let’s hope it’s text ads on the screen and not audio ads as part of the stream, one of things that puts me off other streamed suggestion music players.

Adam and Joe MP3 Clips

Taken from their Saturday show on XFM.

They talked on their show a few weeks back about doing a podcast, Adam mentions it on his site. They finish the current run of show in April and hopefully something will come of it after that.

What’s in a name?

Monday, February 20th, 2006

Came across this show on Del.ic.ious:

This week on The Infinite Mind, host Dr. Peter Kramer explores the psychology and history of names, and how they shape our identity. We take a closer look at the curious coincidence of people whose names match their profession, and we speak with film makers Alan Berliner and Grace Lee, who both made documentaries charting their quest for the people who share their name.

We analyze how products like IPod and Viagra were named with Steve Manning, managing director of Igor, a “naming company.” William Bright, a linguist and anthropologist specializing in place names, tells us how places like Boring, Oregon and Intercourse, Pennsylvania got their names. And commentator John Hockenberry explains why names will never hurt him.

The history of Englishness in pop music

Saturday, February 18th, 2006

Paul WellerFront Row on Radio 4 last night had a special on Englishness in in pop music.

The show featured Ray Davies, Paul Weller, Damon Albarn, Simon Armitage, D.J. Taylor and John Harris talking about the very English sound typified by The Kinks, The Arctic Monkeys and many more.

Front Row really does do some great stuff sometimes. If you missed it it should be available on Listen Again for the next week or so.

I want one of these

Wifi RadioI was reading the Guardian this morning and came Victor Keagan was talking about Internet radio and mentioned the wifi radio.

It’s a really interesting idea. A radio that uses your broadband connection to stream Internet radio. I listen to a lot of Internet Radio and hate the fact I have to have my PC on to listen – meaning I can’t listen away from a computer. Victor Keagan mentioned he had little problems with network connectivity – but found it difficult to search out new stations. At £199 it’s pretty reasonable, especially as it can also stream MP3s from another computer on the network meaning you can listen to your music stored on the PC anywhere in the house.

Yahoo! Podcasts

Wednesday, October 19th, 2005

Yahoo! have just announced a new podcast directory – parts of it have a passing resenblance to 43 Things.
It’s very American in focus but it looks like it has some interesting stuff. It certainly is easier on the eye than ipodder or Podcast.net.

Yahoo! launch audio search

Wednesday, August 10th, 2005

Yahoo! Audio SearchYahoo! have just launched a beta of their audio search tool and it’s lookinglike it caould be really useful . It searches all the major download sites as well as the web. I’ve only had a couple of plays with it and found some Radio 4 comedy I’ve not heard before.

My only concern is around copywrite – the limited searches I did found copyright material on personal homepages let’s hope that the legal firms of the big record companies don’t find out about it, they’d have a field day.

Ricky Gervais MP3s

Wednesday, July 20th, 2005

Rick GervaisXFM have put up Ricky Gervais’ fantastic show as MP3′s. I can’t beleive it’s taken me six weeks to notice!

Mind you I can’t beleive he hasn’t been taken of the air, the show I heard a few weeks back he was looking for someone to stick their finger up Keith’s arse.

Free Thought Radio

Friday, April 15th, 2005

I don’t know what’s scarier, the religous injustice this station talks about or the way the creepy presenter speaks.

Talking about religious persecution in medieval France, of how peasants were dragged behind horses for not giving themselves to God in between Frank Zappa classics, Ok for five minutes but don’t listen for too long ‘coz it’ll drive you a bit mental.
