New stuff

Monday, June 12th, 2006

I’ve been rather busy of late, new job, overgrown garden and much more have got in my way a bit.

So as a little recompense to my loyal readers I’ve collected together some lovely links:

Podcasts

Channel4radio – If like me you are a lost addict then Channel 4′s podcast is essential listening. Ian Lee presents and really makes the podcast.

British MacCast – Great editing, some stutering but a great Mac podcast

Coolness Roundup – Global update podcast on really cool stuff

Another geeky one, Web 2.0 show podcasts for lots of talk on all things web related

Listen again

Sunday Best – the Battle for Babylon
The site of the famous Hanging Gardens of Babylon lies only about 70km south of Baghdad where recent events have created a threat to its survival. Used as a base camp by military forces, there are reports of serious damage to the archaeological remains. Jonathan Charles investigates.

Steve Lamacq takes a look at the making of the seminal 80s dance
crossover album Screamadelica by Primal Scream.

If you haven’t discovered it yet Russel Brand on 6 Music on Sunday mornings is really, really funny. (Thanks GLR) follwed by Andrew Collins whose Sunday paper reviews are hilarious.

Coming up

Budleigh Salterton’s most famous citizen, traveller and worldly guru knows nothing about football or Germany, but from the moment he decides to book a strolling holiday in the Schwarzwald he pitches headlong into the thrilling arena of The World Cup.

And In Business, Thursday at 8.30pm the Tangled Web. The Internet is evolving into a powerful new communications medium. It is leaching power away from the old information providers in press and broadcasting and handing it to a new democracy of bloggers and communicators, now numbered in millions. Peter Day asks how established businesses will cope with this vital change in the media landscape.

Boothby Grafoe dissed

Thursday, May 18th, 2006

MC BlueKunckles has pinned some rhymes about Boothby Grafoe

Yo Mister Graffoe,
Betta do yo math-O,
Mess with my homie,
Your ass I’ll Straff-O.

Listen up Boothby,
Y’ know what the truth be,
Yo lame-ass show,
Has a ‘Radio 2′ feel.

Word.

Jamie Theakston goes national – sort of…

Friday, April 28th, 2006

Jamie Theakston’s Heart 107 breakfast show has just gone national. The show is not syndicated to Heart’s other stations in across the UK but only on digital (Heart’s Birmingham and Nottingham FM stations are still local DJs for local people).

But get this – the show goes out an hour later after being edited to remove any London specific content. So if Theakston talks about a nght out he’s had in London it’ll get cut. Strange indeed. I get the feeling nobody is going listen.

Linda Smith

Tuesday, February 28th, 2006

Linda SmithI’ve just heard the sad news about Linda Smith.

She was by a long way the best thing about many Radio 4 comedies – Just a minute will never be quite the same again.

Wendy James : interview

Tuesday, February 21st, 2006

I remember getting my first radio when I was 12 years old – wow, it was ace. A black Philips that my great uncle had been using in his shed. The thing was ancient but I loved it. I used to spend hours listening to it.

My local music station at the time Severn Sound was playing a lot of Transvision Vamp, mostly “Baby, I don’t care”. I remember Transvision Vamp just disappearing suddenly and being quite disappointed about it – only for Wendy James to pop up with a solo album a few years later and disappear again. Along with the interviewer in this piece I had a massive crush on Wendy James and I often wondered what happened to her – read on and find out what did.

Moyles is Disc Shocky

Tuesday, February 21st, 2006

DJ Chris Moyles yesterday branded a listener’s children “f***ing brats” live on his Radio 1 breakfast show

He’s a bad boy isn’t he.

What are your thought on Moyles? Is he the saviour of Radio One? Let me know what you think by adding a comment.

Over at O’ Malley speaks. Kevin has just put a nifty little music thingy in his site. It plays a set of MP3s stored on the site through a little music player. Very cool.

The best radio on a mobile?

Monday, February 13th, 2006

Sony Ericsson K750iWhen I was looking for a new mobile recently at the top of my list of features was a really good radio. I walked in Carphone Warehouse and asked the guy working there if he could recommend me a phone with a good radio. This seemed to really throw the poor guy. He ummed and ahhhed for a while and eventually showed me the K750i from Sony Ericsson.

And guess what? It really does have a very good radio. RDS, auto tuning and loads more features make it fantastic. My favourite thing about the phone is that I can use it as a clock radio – meaning I can hear the Today programme in it’s full glory (well through little speaker in the back of the phone) wherever I am.

Not only is radio good but the Mp3 player is pretty good too. It’s a top phone, go and buy one now!

Boothby Graffoe replies…

Friday, October 21st, 2005

I had a bit of moan about Boothby Grafoe about a month back and he’s repsonded – seems the poor guy is very angry:

no, joe, it’s not just you, it’s countless others like you who have nothing better to do than moan about stuff that in the grand scheme of things mean about as much as you. But there’re countless others again who like my work, and to be honest so what? Try to relax, mate. If you want to write letters U Win Tin is in gaol in Mayanmar for no particular reason, you could write to them and ask if he could be let out. I’m glad I irritate you. It’s wot I was born to do you pointless, thoughtless, talentless wanker.

sincere regards,

boothby graffoe

Seems I’m not the only one who who doesn’t rate his stuff much:

Joe

As it happens I agree with you here. I love Radio 4 comedy on the whole- some of it is utterly brilliant (the Boosch, the Consultants, Dead Ringers) but like you I feel that Boothby Graffoe has more of a “radio 2″ feel about his humour. I didn’t find his reply to you very funny either.

Yahoo! launch audio search

Wednesday, August 10th, 2005

Yahoo! Audio SearchYahoo! have just launched a beta of their audio search tool and it’s lookinglike it caould be really useful . It searches all the major download sites as well as the web. I’ve only had a couple of plays with it and found some Radio 4 comedy I’ve not heard before.

My only concern is around copywrite – the limited searches I did found copyright material on personal homepages let’s hope that the legal firms of the big record companies don’t find out about it, they’d have a field day.
