Jarvis Cocker on Desert Island Discs

Friday, April 29th, 2005

Did you hear it this morning? Fantastic, great radio. Jarvis Cocker is one of those people who is just so easy to listen to. He talked about what’s happening with Pulp and his thinking behind the music he makes. Well worth a listen.

The third Reith Lecture

Thursday, April 21st, 2005

Lord Broer was a lot closer to the mark with last night’s Reith Lecture – his observation that for technology companies to succeed they need to bring ideas and the best of breed technologies from suppliers together was spot on.

He also noted that innovation comes when younger minds enter an organisation and challenging the excepted way of things – which in my experience is very true.

Fantastic – can’t wait for the next instalment.

The sort of programme Radio 4 does really well.

I never thought that a documentary about Queuing (that’s Standing in Line for you American Folk) could be so interesting. The history of queuing from the second world war to the auotmated queues we find now – Radio 4 at it’s best.

Reith Lectures

Monday, April 11th, 2005

Don’t know what you thought about last weeks Reith Lecture – I found it a little predictable. Lots of guff about scientists talking in “laymans terms” as the only way to bring science to the masses.

Come on Lord Broer, the problem is not with the scienctists it’s with the educators, there needs to be a complete overhaul of the way science is taught at school so the public can understand scientists and the work that they produce.

Art of the Mix

Monday, April 4th, 2005

I forget how many mix tapes I must have made in the last ten years or so – I was rooting through some stuff over the weekend and I came across a tape I made about 8 years ago. My god, how sad was I? Think Fat Boy Slim segwaying into something by, and I am so embarrassed to admit this, T’Pau. What was I thinking?
Art of the Mix
Anyway, last week on Mitch Benn’s Crimes Against Music they covered this very subject – and it seems I’m not alone in being really frightened about my mix tapes coming back to haunt me.

I also came across this little site over the weekend where you can set up virtual mixes that you can share with friends or just about anybody. The site will even print CD labels for you – genius.

A further bit of foraging turned up this, Unheard.org which lists US Public Radio shows that offer something a bit different.

On of the first streams I loaded up was a show called A-Side, B-side which is 90 minutes of mix tapes taken from Art of the Mix. Now be careful as some of mixes, are well, sketchy, but others are really ace – happy listening folks!

I’m listening in at the minute…

Radio writer James Follett presents some of his favourite work from the last 25 years. The Devil to Pay is genius. If your reading this on Saturday night tune in to BBC 7 now to catch the last couple of hours.

Tom Robinson interviewes David Arnold on 6 Music

Wednesday, March 23rd, 2005

Tom Robinson has just finished interviewing David Arnold on 6 Music and what a great interview it was. A real gem. They talked about the work he’s done with Bjork and his various moive scores. Something I didn’t know was that David Arnold helped his cousin(!) the fantastic Damien Rice with his career.

Hopefully it’ll be available to download from tomorrow.

A real shame (please switch things back BBC 7)

Monday, March 21st, 2005

I’m sure I’m not alone in being a bit peeved with BBC Radio 7 for changing their evening schedules.
BBC Radio 7
I listen to Radio 4′s excellent comedy every evening at 6.30pm when I get back from work – after which I usually switch over to BBC 7 to hear a repeat of ‘I’m sorry I haven’t a clue’ or ‘Just a minute’. But to my utter dismay BBC 7 have started playing older comedy – which although funny is not nearly as good as more recent stuff.

So if anybody from BBC 7 is reading this – switch things back to the way they were!
