The World in a Briefcase

Tuesday, February 6th, 2007

Great stuff, from Radio last night:

In August 1940, as Hitler prepared to invade Britain, a top secret mission designed to turn the tide of the war was under way. A team of Britain’s top scientists and engineers were on their way to America. They carried with them a briefcase containing our most valuable technological secrets – to give them away.

Brain Eno on 6 Music

Thursday, May 4th, 2006

Brian Eno Last night 6 music broadcast a fantastic interview with producer legend Brian Eno.

Eno has some great stories about recording with the likes of U2 and James. He told a fantastic anecdote about Bono and his busy life style. U2 were recording their “All that you can leave behind” album and Bono was having trouble finding the time to record with the band as he was constantly on the phone to Bill Gates and the like.

Eno decided to have an afternoon where the bad were not to be interupted and told the receptionist at the studio as much. All was fine for the first hour but then the receptionist gave a sheepish knock at the door.

She mouthed to Bono across the room while making her hand into a phone – “It’s the Pope”. How could any Irishman refuse that call?

Alan Moore on Chain Reaction

Monday, April 24th, 2006

A friend has just given me the MP3 of Stewart Lee’s fantastic interview of Alan Moore. Moore is the creator of some of the great comic book ‘heros’ including V for Vendetta and Constantine. He talks about the creation of V and how he turned the idea of the comic book hero on it’s head.

It’s a shame the BBC listen again archive doesn’t stretch back to when the show was first broadcast (Jan 05). I have the MP3s so leave a comment if you’d like me to pass them on to you.

“Chris Evans is a shocker” shocker

Wednesday, April 19th, 2006

He is absolutely disgusting. I can’t understand why they have replaced the relaxing Johnnie Walker

Unamed Radio 2 listener

Good ol’ Chris Evans, glad to see he hasn’t changed. I missed his drive time debut. Did anybody catch it?

Some of the worst radio I’ve ever heard

Thursday, March 16th, 2006

Picture the scene; I get home from work late after a bad day. Feeling tired and low I tune in to Radio 4. Imagine my surprise when I hear Count Arthur Strong’s Radio show. Instead of the usual six thirty comedy I hear some variety show out of the 1950′s. Confusing, unfunny, clichéd rubbish by someone pretending to be some has been variety star and what’s worse? It’s on again next week.

Come on Radio 4 get him off air now!

Did anybody else hear it? If so tell the world what you thought.

Moyles is Disc Shocky

Tuesday, February 21st, 2006

DJ Chris Moyles yesterday branded a listener’s children “f***ing brats” live on his Radio 1 breakfast show

He’s a bad boy isn’t he.

What are your thought on Moyles? Is he the saviour of Radio One? Let me know what you think by adding a comment.

The history of Englishness in pop music

Saturday, February 18th, 2006

Paul WellerFront Row on Radio 4 last night had a special on Englishness in in pop music.

The show featured Ray Davies, Paul Weller, Damon Albarn, Simon Armitage, D.J. Taylor and John Harris talking about the very English sound typified by The Kinks, The Arctic Monkeys and many more.

Front Row really does do some great stuff sometimes. If you missed it it should be available on Listen Again for the next week or so.

As Safe as Houses

Tuesday, February 14th, 2006

I love Marcus Brigstocke, I think he’s one of the best things about Radio 4. I caught the second programme in his series on the British obsession with owning their own house last Saturday and what a treat it was.

Apparently the Queen owns the land my house is built on, not sure if I’m ok with that, still there’s not much I can do about it I guess.

The final part of the three part series is next Saturday at 10.30am.

Adam and Joe on XFM

Tuesday, January 10th, 2006

Adam and Joe
I keep catching parts of Adam and Joe’s XFM show on Saturday afternoons. It really is the best thing I’ve heard on radio for a long time. Fantastically funny chat and really stupid stuff as well as a great competition make it a joy to listen to.

You can hear Adam and Joe on XFM every Saturday from 1pm – 3pm.

The Ultimate Music Year

Monday, January 2nd, 2006

I’ve been listening to Radio 2′s Ultimate Music Year and what a treat it has been. Hosted by Simon Mayo and featuring Andrew Collins and others nominations were made for the best music year of the past 50.

Fantastic music throughout and great discussion, a real radio treat. And best of all my favourite year was voted the best – 1967.

When the stand is better than the host

Thursday, November 10th, 2005

I found myself listening to Sarah Cox’s Radio 1 show last Saturday afternoon. The host was away and in here place were Chappers and Dave who were very funny – I haven’t enjoyed a Radio 1 show so much for a long, long time.

Roll on the day when Chappers and Dave get their own show.

I’m sorry I haven’t a clue

…is back and didn’t realise how much I missed it.

The Party Line

Friday, May 27th, 2005

The new radio sit-com from Punt & Dennis. Very funny I thought – I reallty enjoyed it. Can;t wait for next week.

Balalaikas in Blackpool

Thursday, May 12th, 2005

While catching up on some programmes I missed I came across this Radio 4 documentary – Balalaikas in Blackpool.

Apparently during the cold war the USSR produced a military map of Blackpool of all places. The documentary takes the map and asks various Blackpool residents firstly if it’s any good and secondly if they know anything about it. They also pull a old Russian spy out of retirement to ask him about it.

Missed the last Reith Lecture…

Friday, April 29th, 2005

…and will be cacthing up with it over the weekend.

Talking of which I need to catch up on the last couple of “In our time” programmes. The last one looked really intersting- “Perception and the Senses – how do we see what we see?”

Seems like I’ve got a weekend of high-brow listening ahead of me.
