Missed the last Reith Lecture…

Filed under: Did you hear? — joe @ 5:04 pm

…and will be cacthing up with it over the weekend.

Talking of which I need to catch up on the last couple of “In our time” programmes. The last one looked really intersting- “Perception and the Senses – how do we see what we see?”

Seems like I’ve got a weekend of high-brow listening ahead of me.

I hate the Archers

Filed under: Is it just me... — joe @ 4:56 pm

I’ve been thinking long and hard about this – I listen to the Archers at lease once a day, well I say listen it’s just in the background mostly, but I really can’t seem to get into it. I can’t relate to any of the characters, the story lines, or even the location. The worst thing about it is that the Mrs really likes it, so I can’t flick over to 5 Live or BBC 7 when it comes on.

I know that I’m not alone in this, there must be people out there who feel the same – I just haven’t met any of them. Everyone I talk to about it either never listens so doesn’t really have an opinion or they love the Archers. Am I alone in hating the Archers?

Jarvis Cocker on Desert Island Discs

Filed under: Did you hear? — joe @ 4:48 pm

Did you hear it this morning? Fantastic, great radio. Jarvis Cocker is one of those people who is just so easy to listen to. He talked about what’s happening with Pulp and his thinking behind the music he makes. Well worth a listen.

The third Reith Lecture

Filed under: Did you hear? — joe @ 12:02 pm

Lord Broer was a lot closer to the mark with last night’s Reith Lecture – his observation that for technology companies to succeed they need to bring ideas and the best of breed technologies from suppliers together was spot on.

He also noted that innovation comes when younger minds enter an organisation and challenging the excepted way of things – which in my experience is very true.

Fantastic – can’t wait for the next instalment.

Underwater Radio

Filed under: Radio and MP3 Technology — joe @ 1:58 pm

Underwater radioSwimming for me has also been fun if a little boring. Well the days of bordem in the pool could be over. h20 Audio have developed a casing for iRiver’s mp3/FM radios.

Free Thought Radio

Filed under: Listen online, Radio Stations — joe @ 3:57 pm

I don’t know what’s scarier, the religous injustice this station talks about or the way the creepy presenter speaks.

Talking about religious persecution in medieval France, of how peasants were dragged behind horses for not giving themselves to God in between Frank Zappa classics, Ok for five minutes but don’t listen for too long ‘coz it’ll drive you a bit mental.

The sort of programme Radio 4 does really well.

Filed under: Did you hear? — joe @ 12:43 pm

I never thought that a documentary about Queuing (that’s Standing in Line for you American Folk) could be so interesting. The history of queuing from the second world war to the auotmated queues we find now – Radio 4 at it’s best.

Listening on-line is more poular than ever

Filed under: General — joe @ 12:23 pm

BBC Radio’s listen on demand service really is fantastic and it seems it’s going from strength-to-strength.

The new BBC Radio Player – re-launched at the end of January – exceeded all expectations in February as on-demand radio listening raced to a record nine million requests

Radio Blog Club

Filed under: Radio and MP3 Technology — joe @ 12:16 pm

Radio blog club is an interesting idea – it allows you to stream mp3s of your choosing on your website. I’ll try and set one up over the next couple of weeks, although there must be copywrite issues I’m sure. Anyway, watch this space.

Reith Lectures

Filed under: Did you hear? — joe @ 3:29 pm

Don’t know what you thought about last weeks Reith Lecture – I found it a little predictable. Lots of guff about scientists talking in “laymans terms” as the only way to bring science to the masses.

Come on Lord Broer, the problem is not with the scienctists it’s with the educators, there needs to be a complete overhaul of the way science is taught at school so the public can understand scientists and the work that they produce.

Hello to Paul & Lizzie Hawkins, who’s currently mending the clothes horse, wants this song as in bed with the ‘flu

Shout out generator in actionHave you ever wondered who those people are who ask for shout-outs on the radio? Well it seems that they may not be people at all.

Devaweb have a shout-out generator that spits out a request from a set of predefined terms. Give it a go yourself and see if you can get something that makes sense:
