Britcaster – Best of British Podcasts

February 24th, 2006

I’ve been looking for really good British podcasts for a while now to get me out of my Radio 4 habit – well, the search is over, Britcaster lists a huge amount of British podcasts. I’m going try out a couple over the weekend and post some recommendations next week.

Ricky Gervais Podcast no longer free

February 22nd, 2006

The BBC comedy blog wrote yesterday about how Ricky Gervais is going to start charging for his popular podcast. It’ll only cost a £1 but could start a trend.

Would I subscribe if I had to pay? I’m not sure. It’ll be interesting to see how it works out and if he can replicate the success he had with the free podcast. He had over 250,000 downloads a week so even if he get half that he’ll be a very rich man.

Would you pay a quid to hear Gervais?

Looking for free Ricky Gervais MP3′s?
XFM have put up some MP3′s of his old Saturday morning shows.

Wendy James : interview

February 21st, 2006

I remember getting my first radio when I was 12 years old – wow, it was ace. A black Philips that my great uncle had been using in his shed. The thing was ancient but I loved it. I used to spend hours listening to it.

My local music station at the time Severn Sound was playing a lot of Transvision Vamp, mostly “Baby, I don’t care”. I remember Transvision Vamp just disappearing suddenly and being quite disappointed about it – only for Wendy James to pop up with a solo album a few years later and disappear again. Along with the interviewer in this piece I had a massive crush on Wendy James and I often wondered what happened to her – read on and find out what did.

Moyles is Disc Shocky

February 21st, 2006

DJ Chris Moyles yesterday branded a listener’s children “f***ing brats” live on his Radio 1 breakfast show

He’s a bad boy isn’t he.

What are your thought on Moyles? Is he the saviour of Radio One? Let me know what you think by adding a comment.

What’s in a name?

February 20th, 2006

Came across this show on Del.ic.ious:

This week on The Infinite Mind, host Dr. Peter Kramer explores the psychology and history of names, and how they shape our identity. We take a closer look at the curious coincidence of people whose names match their profession, and we speak with film makers Alan Berliner and Grace Lee, who both made documentaries charting their quest for the people who share their name.

We analyze how products like IPod and Viagra were named with Steve Manning, managing director of Igor, a “naming company.” William Bright, a linguist and anthropologist specializing in place names, tells us how places like Boring, Oregon and Intercourse, Pennsylvania got their names. And commentator John Hockenberry explains why names will never hurt him.

The history of Englishness in pop music

February 18th, 2006

Paul WellerFront Row on Radio 4 last night had a special on Englishness in in pop music.

The show featured Ray Davies, Paul Weller, Damon Albarn, Simon Armitage, D.J. Taylor and John Harris talking about the very English sound typified by The Kinks, The Arctic Monkeys and many more.

Front Row really does do some great stuff sometimes. If you missed it it should be available on Listen Again for the next week or so.

Internet Radio Blog

Over at O’ Malley speaks. Kevin has just put a nifty little music thingy in his site. It plays a set of MP3s stored on the site through a little music player. Very cool.

As Safe as Houses

February 14th, 2006

I love Marcus Brigstocke, I think he’s one of the best things about Radio 4. I caught the second programme in his series on the British obsession with owning their own house last Saturday and what a treat it was.

Apparently the Queen owns the land my house is built on, not sure if I’m ok with that, still there’s not much I can do about it I guess.

The final part of the three part series is next Saturday at 10.30am.

The best radio on a mobile?

February 13th, 2006

Sony Ericsson K750iWhen I was looking for a new mobile recently at the top of my list of features was a really good radio. I walked in Carphone Warehouse and asked the guy working there if he could recommend me a phone with a good radio. This seemed to really throw the poor guy. He ummed and ahhhed for a while and eventually showed me the K750i from Sony Ericsson.

And guess what? It really does have a very good radio. RDS, auto tuning and loads more features make it fantastic. My favourite thing about the phone is that I can use it as a clock radio – meaning I can hear the Today programme in it’s full glory (well through little speaker in the back of the phone) wherever I am.

Not only is radio good but the Mp3 player is pretty good too. It’s a top phone, go and buy one now!

Great stuff:

I want one of these

February 2nd, 2006

Wifi RadioI was reading the Guardian this morning and came Victor Keagan was talking about Internet radio and mentioned the wifi radio.

It’s a really interesting idea. A radio that uses your broadband connection to stream Internet radio. I listen to a lot of Internet Radio and hate the fact I have to have my PC on to listen – meaning I can’t listen away from a computer. Victor Keagan mentioned he had little problems with network connectivity – but found it difficult to search out new stations. At £199 it’s pretty reasonable, especially as it can also stream MP3s from another computer on the network meaning you can listen to your music stored on the PC anywhere in the house.

Radio Rewind

January 28th, 2006

Radio One Logo

Old skool radio 1 jingles, logos and other fun stuff.

Invasion of the Robo-DJs

January 18th, 2006

Slightly older story here about Robot DJs being the new thing in radio. Bit a funny idea if you ask me, still it’s probably better than you average GWR DJ.

Lovely Radio
